Living with Charcot Foot can be quite struggle. Your mobility is likely impaired, you may be experiencing pain, you may even be home bound. We know the struggle is real which is why we have included this selection of products we have found helpful in making our lives a bit easier. Because we know how challenging it can be to leave the house and go shopping we only recommend products which can be delivered to your door. If you know of additional items which have made living with Charcot Foot easier for you, please share them with us as well. We are all in this together!
Crutches can be a real challenge when you are non-weight bearing with Charcot Foot. Crutches also increase your fall risk. We highly recommend using a knew scooter whenever possible. We have tried these knee scooters and highly recommend them.
The KneeRover Steerable Knee Scooter is one of the best Knee Scooters on the market. It is affordable, easy to put together, sturdy and comes with a basket attachment. This scooter works well going up and down ramps and handles bumpy paths smoothly. It is available for purchase in a variety of colors which is a nice option as well.
The OasisSpace All Terrain Knee Scooter is another favorite for us. The All Terrain Knee Scooter has air filled tires and is a bit sturdier than other scooters on the market. This scooter is great to use in the yard as it maneuvers well on rougher terrain. If you are sick of sticking to sidewalks, this is the scooter for you. It also comes with a basket attachment, folding handle feature and adjustable seat.
Those of us with Charcot Foot spend plenty of time in casts or boots. It’s not fun and can make daily living tasks, like showering, a challenge. Anytime we are in casts we have to cover them before showering. We have tested out dozens of different cast covers and haven’t found anything better than the Doact Leg Cast Cover. This is one reusable cast cover that holds up well over time, doesn’t leak and is easy to get on and off.
Showering can be a little dangerous for those with Charcot Foot. To reduce fall risk always use a shower chair. We recommend the Drive Medical Shower Chair. We prefer this shower chair over shower stools because of the stability it provides. It never wobbles, proving a safe and sturdy seat to shower on. The legs are height adjustable and the seat can be put together easily with no tools required.
A handheld shower head is also a helpful tool. Since you can’t stand in the shower this allows you to move the shower head around as needed instead of moving your body. We are big fans of the Delta Faucet H2OKinetic. It has nine different settings, including massage! It is very easy to install and use.
Individuals with Charcot Foot often battle dry skin. Dry skin can lead to small wounds which eventually turn into large wounds, adding additional risk of amputation. We have tried so many different types of lotion but have had the most success with Atrac-Tain Superior Moisturizing Cream. Truth be told, we will never buy any other lotion again. We always buy it in the three pack just to ensure we never run out.
When non-weight bearing this Reacher Grabber Tool comes in handy. It is a foldable grabber with an extra long handle. It makes picking up things a breeze and saves you from having to get up unnecessarily. It is sturdy and holds up well over time.
We hope these items help you as you navigate living with Charcot Foot. As we find new items we will update this list.
